This is a gentle story, although there is one dramatic episode towards the end of the book. In contrast to Sinclair is David Stewart, the dependable and efficient family lawyer. She had dreamed of marrying Sinclair but meeting him again she finds he is not as she remembered and she wonders whether he can be trusted. There she is reunited with her dashing and handsome cousin Sinclair, whom she had idolised as a child. It’s easy listening, and though the ending was predictable I did enjoy it.Īfter years living in America, Jane Marsh is summoned back to Scotland by her grandmother to stay at her beloved Elvie, the remote and beautiful family estate. Rosamunde Pilcher’s The End of Summer read by Geraldine James was entertaining enough to fill in three hours of the journey. I don’t often listen to audiobooks but a car journey up to Scotland seemed the ideal time to do so – reading in the car just makes me feel queasy.

Poirot and Hastings take it upon themselves to investigate what happened. He is murdered before this contradiction is resolved. When they meet, Edgware tells Poirot that, on the contrary, he had agreed to one. The head is that of a very young man for someone with an adult daughter.Īctress Jane Wilkinson asks Poirot to intercede with her estranged husband, Lord Edgware, to secure her a divorce. He has taken liberties with the actual murder knife (which in the book is one used for Ellis’ corns). Tom Adams at least gets a credit for the painting on the front, which bears echoes of his cover for Roger Ackroyd. These are two reasons why I am re-collecting the editions that I originally read. Some of the print is smudged: this is typical of the shoddy 1970s / 80s versions. The cover is not nearly as appealing as the old “lined” Fontana that I would have read in the 1960s (see right). It can also have a detrimental effect on consumer well-being because milkshake-multitasking interferes with clear thinking and decision-making, which lowers self-control and leads to rash, impulsive buying and poor eating decisions. A large number of friends on social media networks may appear impressive, but according to a new report, the more social circles a person is linked to, the more likely the social media will be a source of stress. Social media has become as ubiquitous as television in our everyday lives, and this research shows that multitasking social media can be as addictive as drugs, alcohol, and chemical substance abuse. “social media addict? This is a very real problem-so much so that researchers from Norway developed a new instrument to measure Facebook addiction called the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale. It isn’t too far, maybe a little over a mile, but it’s dumping snow, and I didn’t bring my coat. I’ll be a lot less likely to go to jail in the morning. In fact, it probably wouldn’t take a drug recognition expert to expertly recognize how fucked up I am right now. But any cop trained as a DRE would definitely know what’s up. I don’t mind getting a ticket, if that’s the most that will happen. She lives with her family in Carson City, Nevada. Now she is the New York Times bestselling author of Crank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks, Fallout, and Perfect. siting his girlfriend out here or something. Ellen Hopkins edited and wrote short stores for small, alternative publisher before beginning her own novels. Still, just my luck, tonight will be the night one is vi. I’ll have to walk, and I’d better get going before a cop happens along, not that many cops use this road. It landed facedown in a drainage ditch, one rear wheel tilted off the ground. To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:ĭon’t think I’m hurt, at least not badly.īeyond a likely steering-wheel- shaped bruise, and having the wind totally stolen from me, I’m all in one piece, and everything seems to work. Talk about a rock tumbler! knocking off each other’s rough edges, learning to laugh and cry along the way. So the ‘Yada Yada Prayer Group’ decided to keep praying for each other via e mail, and when our personal struggles got too intense for cyberspace, we decided to meet together on Sunday nights. But something happened that weekend to make us realize we had to hang together. There was Flo, an outspoken ex drug addict Ruth, a Messianic Jew who could smother mother you to death and Yo Yo, an ex con who wasn’t even a Christian! Not to mention women from Jamaica, Honduras, South Africa practically a mini United Nations. Who would have imagined that God would make a group as mismatched as ours the closest of friends? I almost didn’t go to the Chicago Women’s Conference after all, being thrown together with five hundred strangers wasn’t exactly my ‘comfort zone.’ When I was assigned to a prayer group of twelve women at the conference, I wasn’t sure what to think. What do an ex con, a former addict, a college student, and a married mother of two have in common? Nothing, or so I thought. The characters are always somewhat on the fringe of society, your lovable outcasts and weirdos, and if I’ve done my job, you keep reading because you find the characters delightful and you want to know what happens to them and see them find a place in the world. The fantasy backdrop is more in the “courtly politics” vein rather than physical action, although there is a little of that. My brand is: cozy romantic fantasy about a couple in healthy relationship with lots of details about food, clothes, and domestic life, and bits of humor. It took me all those years for the fan mail to trickle in before it finally dawned on me that it is the most beloved of all my books, as far as I can tell. However, as the years have gone by, I’ve gotten many fan letters for that book from both kids and adult women who tell me it’s one of their favorite books and they’ve read it many times. Its review average on Amazon and Goodreads was never great, which initially made me feel like there was no place in the world for what I most love to write. My second novel, Between the Sea and Sky (Bloomsbury, 2001), is my favorite of my published books. One thing it has taken me a while to realize is that just because you don’t write the most popular thing and you get some bad reviews because of it, doesn’t mean you need to change anything. I’ve moved into indie publishing lately, where it is entirely my choice which books I release into the world. Overall,īut then again, weren’t those stories the originators of cruel violence in fancy words? In Seasonal Fears it’s easy to get caught up in the world. There’s a distinct almost fairy tale feeling to the book which creates a fascinating juxtaposition with the violence. It’s kind of like if you mashed lovers riding off into the sunset with a murderous quest for their lives or they die kind of thing. If you love those stories of us-against-the-world, then you will love Seasonal Fears. All the way to the terror of looking into someone’s eyes without mercy. Seasonal Fears encapsulates that subtle wrongness on the back of your neck. Overall it feels multi-dimensional and a bit otherworldly. McGuire is able to balance a world we think we know, from Middlegame, and introduce another dimension (I loved the interactions from the first one here). While it took me a bit of time to get used to the world, and honestly I could very well be missing things, I ended up adoring every moment. Seasonal Fears is this perfect mash up of a rich and complex fantasy world, a love that might be doomed – jury’s still out – and a fight that just might change everything they ever knew. TW: suicidal ideation, murder, violence, suicide This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.) (Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. David Shannon captures the essence of a busy, take charge preschooler, filled with manic energy, in this sequel to No, David! and David Goes To School. Late at night, lying in bed, David has an epiphany, "Yes! It was me!" and apologizes to his mother as she tucks him, lovingly, back in bed. "I didn't mean to!" "I forgot!" "I couldn't help it!" "No, it wasn't me!" "It was an accident!" "But Dad says it!" Nothing is really his fault, he's just a victim of circumstance. Irrepressible David is back in all his little boy glory, and as he tells us on the title page, "NO! It's not my fault!" Whether he's skateboarding into furniture, making a silly face during class pictures, pulling the cat's tail, or eating the dog's biscuits, burping loudly at meals, sneaking a taste of icing off the cake before dinner, or saying bad words, he's got a logical answer for everything. Besides, if you know these books you know the theme should be “bury your favs” lol I’m gonna go cry now. In my books youll find stories of men and women finding their inner strength when all seems lost. I figured Id write you myself than have corporate copy pasted below my totally natural author photo. And *spoiler alert* before someone says “bury your gays” I will defend that choice because it was meaningful, powerful, and cemented his legacy as a top tier character. Im Pierce Brown, the author of the Red Rising Saga, a NYT 1 bestseller. But in typical Pierce Brown fashion he created someone so rich, nuanced, and heartbreaking that the fans responded with love. Light Bringer will be the sixth book of the Red Rising Saga, and the third of the Iron Gold Trilogy. He wasn’t a token, he wasn’t a small side character, he was a new, main character, which was a huge risk when your fan base expects to spend time with characters they already know and love. When he realized his books had found an unexpected home with the queer community he listened to their interpretations of his characters and said “yea absolutely 100% they are all bisexual and I accept 90% of your theories about who has banged” and then he doubled down by adding a queer character to his sequel series who became an instant fan fav.
